North Australia has been a whirlwind trip for 27-year-old adventurer Vicky Sinton, who’s been documenting her trip across the north on her socials.
Currently in Cape York Peninsula, Vicky has covered her two-year road trip extensively on her socials, in particular her time in North Australia, sharing tips and tricks for other solo travellers along the way.
Having planned both paid and free camping in the WikiCamps app, as well as making the most of recommendations from local visitor centres, she’s well placed to share her favourite camps.
“Local visitor centres are great for some extra tips,” she said.
“I’ve been really well looked after and it’s been a wonderful trip.”
In a reel on her social media, Vicky shared her top three camps between Cairns and Darwin.

3. Leichhardt Falls, QLD
Located in the Gulf Country region of North West Queensland, Leichhardt Falls is a plunge waterfall on the Leichardt River.
Home to both rapids and a series of waterfalls, the area is known and loved for its stepped-nature.
“My favourite part about Leichhardt falls was the peaceful mornings and evenings when the sky changed colours with the waterfall in the background,” Vicky said.
“This is a free camp where I met some really great people. You can also swim in the rock pools at the top of the falls.”

2. Cobbold Gorge, QLD
Just six hours from Cairns or Townsville, Cobbold Gorge is home to Australia’s first glass bridge, exploring the ancient landscape that is millions of years old.
“The glass walkway at Cobbold Gorge is obviously a great attraction but I loved the talks from guides about the history and the local knowledge on the area,” she said.
“There are a few walks around this park as well which I really loved.”

Mataranka Homestead, NT
Located one-hour from Katherine or four hours south of Darwin, Mataranka is known for its crystal clear warm springs. With iconic photo opportunities, the springs draw crowds from across Australia for the experience. The area is known for both the Mataranka Hot Springs and Bitter Springs which is close by.
“Mataranka Homestead had such a relaxed feel, the springs were definitely my favourite part here,” Vicky said.
“Staying here overnight allowed me to go nice and early in the morning and have the place to myself.”
