Don’t underestimate how much fun you can have with a tropical work wardrobe.
That’s the message from Townsville stylist Amelia Clements, who says while it can be difficult to navigate a wardrobe which battles hot days and cold air-conditioning, layering for all weather types isn’t as daunting as it sounds.
“What a lot of people underestimate dressing for corporate life in the tropics is the air-conditioning,” she said.
“My number one tip is to wear light layers that are a high percentage of natural fibers so they can breathe when you’re outside, but also keep you warm when you’re in the air-conditioning.”
For example, a midi linen skirt with a simple t-shirt can be layered with an oversized shirt for when it gets cool, but also left on the back of your chair for when you take an outdoor lunch break.

Amelia said her one staple is a light woolen cardigan, with her go-to being this Uniqlo one. Coming in seven different colours and 100 per cent merino wool, it’s an easy office staple to have in a few different colours pending your outfit.
“It’s really easy to store in your bag for most of the day but pull it out when you get too cold in the office,” she said.

“I am also a huge fan of linen pants from Dissh that you can also wear on the weekend, so much so that I have about five different pairs on rotation.”
“A cotton or linen matching set can be worn together, or mix and match with other pieces from your wardrobe.
“My go to is Alemais. They are basically socially acceptable pyjamas.”

As for accessorising, Amelia’s choice is earrings, a simple belt and a watch.
“I’m partial to a Bottega dupe-style earring, simple belt and a nice watch in the same metal to tie the whole look together,” she said.
