The thought of a private island at the foot of the Great Barrier Reef may come with a few dollar signs attached, but this one off the coast of Yeppoon can be privately hired for just $111 a night.
The only hook is, you’ll need 33 others to do it with you.
Pumkin Island, located among the Keppel Islands, is a six hectare island with five self-catering cottages and two beach bungalows, each accommodating for four to six guests.
They can be hired privately, or all together, giving plenty of options for all travellers, but was hugely popular with families.
The $3805 per night cost to hire the entire island includes 14 adults and kids are free. Any additional adult is charged extra.
Laureth Rumble works for the island and said it was hugely popular with families, and was completely booked for the majority of the year.
“We usually get five to seven families at a time, and we are full the whole year,” she said.
“Most of our bookings are for the whole island, about 60 per cent are whole island bookings.”
She said there were few islands which provided the same thing, with Camp Island the only Queensland comparable.
“Each house has a kitchen and BBQs, and a pizza oven, so you can bring all your own food or you can order from our restaurant.
“Sometimes people have a chef come out with them, it really depends on your circumstances.”
“The island is very small, and you’re surrounded by the ocean, able to collect fresh oysters off the rocks so it’s a good holiday for quality time with the people in your life.”
Getting there is easy, with the closest airport being Rockhampton, then getting on the Pumpkin Xpress ferry, or you can make your entrance via helicopter or with your own yacht or private boat.
