A Cairns nurse who was body shamed while enjoying a drink with her friends said the kindness of two strangers gave her hope that attitudes towards bigger bodies are changing.
Jacinta Leicht said while out with friends at the Woolshed in December, she was badly fat shamed by another female.
“When I don’t know the person, this usually doesn’t bother me however on this particular night it really got to me,” she said.

“I walked out of the toilet stall after having a cry and two ladies and my mate were there.
“These three ladies were amazing towards me however the two complete strangers really uplifted me, hugging me and helping me out, as well as buying me a drink.
“After this happened, I then went to Gilligans and another two strangers in the bathroom also uplifted the way I looked, and I really needed that.”
Posting her encounter in Cairns Facebook group Official Cairns Women’s Advice in the hope of finding the strangers to thank them for their kindness, Jacinta said the nearly 100 comments condemning the negative comments also surprised her.
“It’s just a nice reminder that for every one negative comment, there are 100 people lining up to tell you something good,” she said.
“Even though I was badly put down by one female, I was uplifted by four others raising my spirits when I really needed it.
“People like them are the reason we live on.”

Jacinta said she decided to negativity into motivation, and kick start her health journey with another Facebook post inviting others to join her at World Gym DFO.
“While others couldn’t make it, the number of women inviting me on walks around our city really blew me away and it’s empowered me even more,” she said.
