It’s official – brown is having a moment, and it’s here to stay.
It might not be the first colour you think of when it comes to the easy, breezy tropics, but there are ways to weave this trending colour through your wardrobe to make it something you look for that works in our warm climate.
Townsville Stylist Amelia Clements said brown can often feel heavy, but thinking out of the box can make it an easy colour to work with in our climate.
“Have fun mixing and matching this truely versatile colour can really make a wardrobe,” she said.
“You don’t have to go all-out, and there are plenty of options for people wanting to just dip their toe into the trend.”
She said there were seven ways to make it tropics-friendly.
- Go for lighter, breathable fabric.
Linen is a forever go-to for anyone in the north. A linen or cotton piece in chocolate, caramel, or coffee tones help keep things cool. This Seed Heritage linen tie skort is easy to keep as a neutral piece. Go with a brown shirt for a monotone look or grab a white tank with sneakers for something more casual.

2. Look to bright but muted tone pairings
Brown looks amazing with crisp whites, citrus tones, lime, mango, or tangerine, or even a baby blue for that coastal contrast. Incorporate these gorgeous tropical colours with brown, like this blue oversize cotton t-shirt from Sportsgirl and a brown or leopard print bias cut skirt (a look that can be easily dressed up or down).

Sportsgirl’s oversized blue t-shirt is a perfect shade to match with brown.
3. Soft contrast with butter yellow (also a very in colour)
This combo feels fresh and elegant while still being warm and summery. It can also be dressed up and down. This Country Road satin bias skirt is the perfect match to a brown t-shirt and bag and adds a beautiful tropical pop of colour.

A satin bias cut skirt is so versatile, and this Country Road one is no exception.
4. Weave in natural textures
Raffia or woven accessories, shell jewellery, and strappy tan sandals keep it breezy and oh-so tropical. Weave these natural fibres through an outfit to really make it feel like home. These Alias Mae slides come in both brown and white, with the twisted double strap adding a fun element to a casual shoe which also plays to the popular platform trend.

5. A print moment
A brown-based tropical print like palm or floral patterns makes an outfit feel more resort-ready and on brand for our 365 day summer. Sheike’s Kailani midi dress ticks all of those boxes. Pair it with a heeled thong or strappy sandal and wear it night or day.

Wearing fine gold or silver jewellery helps keep the look fresh rather than heavy. Living in the tropics is all about keeping it fresh, particularly in the warmer months, keep those chunky bangles at home and opt for a more sleek look, like this Paspaley chain bracelet.

A Paspaley is truely a keepsake from North Australia, and can be handed down for generations to come.
7.Dip your toe into the trend
If a full brown outfit feels like too much, try a chocolate brown leather bag or sandals for an easy way to incorporate it.
